Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling Properly?

Your AC is running but not cooling because of airflow, settings, or refrigerant issues. Typical culprits include a clogged filter, a thermostat not set to “Cool,” a blocked outdoor condenser, iced evaporator coils, duct leaks, or low refrigerant (a leak).

Quick checks:

  • Replace the air filter.
  • Set thermostat to Cool and lower the setpoint.
  • Clear 2–3 ft around the outdoor unit and rinse debris off fins.
  • Open all supply/return vents.
  • If coils are iced, turn AC off to thaw. Low refrigerant needs a pro. Service available in Novato and Petaluma.
