What causes a toilet to leak from the base when flushing?

A toilet leaking at the base when you flush usually means the wax ring seal has failed. Loose or corroded closet bolts, a damaged flange, or a hairline crack in the bowl can also cause base leaks. Drain or sewer clogs can force water out at the base during a flush. If the toilet rocks, the seal is likely compromised. We fix these issues in Novato, Petaluma, and nearby.

Quick checks:

  • Gently rock the toilet.
  • Lightly snug the bolt caps.
  • If water appears, stop use and shut the valve.
